If the registration renewal costs $100, tin can I look to sell a newly registered car for at least $100 more than one whose registration is about to expire?

No, because the new possessor will demand to pay the registration again nether their name.

Not in CA. The plates stay with the auto, and the fee paid "rolls over" to the new owner.

See CA DMV info here

Vehicle Registration and Title Information

"A refund is non due if you paid the registration fees and so sold the vehicle earlier the expiration engagement. Any adjustment of the fees is an consequence to be addressed betwixt the heir-apparent and seller when establishing the selling price of the vehicle. "

I've besides heard that there is extra demand for newly registered cars in California because of the illegal immigrants (I'grand non quite sure why, since they nonetheless need to have it registered in their names).

On the other paw, many buyers are probably unaware of the fact that the fee "rolls over". So I don't know what the net effect is, and if information technology's wise to renew the registration.

Your leverage to negotiate the car toll to include the registration fees depends on how close you are to the registration due appointment since there'south a rapidly escalating penalisation for late registration. If you're thirty days away, I wouldn't renew. If you lot're three days away, a buyer may look or insist on you paying for the registration late fees. For case, a 31-day belatedly registration will cost $100+$20 penalisation+$thirty late fee+$30 CHP fee = $180.

More proof (if we needed any) that CA has the most whacked-out laws in the country. What happens if the buyer drives off with your plates and and then hit-and-runs somebody? Are the cops going to abort you?

In CA, function of the process of selling a auto is to specifically notify the state that there is a new owner. It is called the "Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability (NRL) System" which can be done on-line

See Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability for more info.

As noted above, that's why you practice a title transfer upon selling the car.

And if somebody STEALS your plates and/or car, you should immediately file a police record - that mode if something does happen, they have official documents showing it was no longer in your possession. But if they only stole the plates, yous'd be safety anyway... since they besides adhere a VIN# to the registration card, and in this example the 2 wouldn't match. So we're actually non that screwy hither in CA, lol.

When I sold my wife's car information technology was registered. I just made the transfer of title a condition of the sale. I did the sale on Saturday, went to AAA and all it costs is the transfer of championship. I passed on three offers who didn't want to transfer the championship. About people will bulldoze on that registration. Y'all will be liable for any parking tickets, tow fees and any possible accident equally long as that vehicle is in your name.
There is no way I would let anyone drive away with a auto in my name. I rather not make the sale
